1) Connect by Discussing Your Own Mental Health Challenges
Create a space for communication that's open and genuine by sharing your own struggles with mental health. This may be an opportunity for you to be an example by showing you get help for yourself.
2) Comfort With Silence
Vocalizing your feelings can be difficult, which is why it's important to be comfortable with silence. Your teen may be searching for how to communicate their feelings and silence gives the opportunity for both of you to create a picture of what's happening.
3) Make Them Feel Heard
When your teen is sharing their feelings with you, acknowledge them by being present and actively listening. Making your teen feel heard is an important step towards continued sharing.
