1) Make Space for Storytelling
In the beginning of the relationship, storytelling plays a big role - talking on the phone for hours and sharing life stories in conversation to learn more about each other. As the relationship matures, it begins to take a back seat in place of more day-to-day, operational conversation that's more routine in nature. Continue to engage in storytelling by asking open-ended questions and learning about each other during your continued growth.
2) Show Fondness and Admiration
Most couples are each other's biggest advocate at the start. Compliments are shared, thanks is given, and positive support when needed. Over time, this advocacy can dwindle and focus may turn more towards behaviors and personality traits that bother you. Be aware of the positive impact of sharing fondness and admiration, and put it into practice.
3) Fun & Flexibility
Have fun, play, and laugh together. This can break through heaviness and stressors. Be flexible and support each other's interests. This requires you to seek out the importance of connection, as you may not always be interested in the activities your partner is.
